Computer Science
Internship
at Syracuse University
Summer 2008
Interested
undergraduate students are invited to apply for an eight-week internship
beginning June 2008. The intern
will assist in an experimental study of in-place sorting methods and related
calculations using unconventional heap structures and both standard and more
recently discovered algorithms.
Intern
Qualifications: The intern should
possess a general background in computer science and have some acquaintance
with the C programming language. The duties of the intern will depend somewhat
on her/his programming background and experience, but in any case will include
running experiments, collecting and tabulating performance data, and assisting
(at the least) in adapting test programs for the various operating systems and
hardware platforms involved in the study. An intern with a strong background in
programming could work on additional tests and assist significantly in
analyzing both experimental results and theoretical performance.
The
Internship Experience: The internship
will run for eight weeks, beginning no earlier than June 2, 2008 and ending no
later than August 8, 2008. The work will be performed at Syracuse University
under the supervision of the investigator. Working space will be provided in
the Center for Science and Technology [CST]. The intern will work 30 hours per
week, generally during normal business hours at CST, over four or five working
days each week. The intern will submit weekly reports on activity and progress
and should maintain a journal (or blog) recording activities as well as
impressions of and reflections on the internship experience.
Funding: Funding is not generally available for this
position. However, students
eligible for support under the ULSAMP program
may wish to explore that option.
Information is available at ulsamp.org (see Syracuse University, ULSAMP
Summer Internship 2008 announcement and application).
To
Apply: Send email to Professor Ernest
Sibert (eesibert@ecs.syr.edu) with a summary of qualifications and relevant
experience. Applicants will be
notified by return email within one week.
If you intend to apply for ULSAMP support, indicate that in your
email. Please note that you must
apply directly to ULSAMP to request funding. ULSAMP applications must be submitted by May 15, 2008.
